When to Resign?
The best way is to write a resignation letter, such a letter can be concise, professional and positive, in ways you probably can't, given the circumstances (See Cover Letters that Knock 'em Dead for resignation letter samples). Hand it to your boss with the request that s/he read it, you'll find it is always easier to talk once the essence of the conversation has been laid out.
Your resignation letter should be short, courteous and to the point.
- Identify that you have accepted a new job that is in line with your plans for professional development
- Identify that you have enjoyed your tenure with the company and have benefited personally from the guidance of your boss, for which you will always be grateful
- Identify a final date of employment with your current company
- Offer to do all in your power to ensure a smooth transfer of duties and responsibilities.
You want good references for now and the future, a career is a long time and you never know when you will be running into these people again, and you don't want to burn any bridges.
